Norm Varieties

For given symbol in the n-th Milnor K-group modulo prime l we construct a splitting variety with several properties. This variety is lgeneric, meaning that it is generic with respect to splitting fields having no finite extensions of degree prime to l. The degree of its top Milnor class is not divisible by l2, and a certain motivic cohomology group of this variety consists of units. The existen...

Norm Varieties and Algebraic Cobordism

We outline briefly results and examples related with the bijectivity of the norm residue homomorphism. We define norm varieties and describe some constructions. We discuss degree formulas which form a major tool to handle norm varieties. Finally we formulate Hilbert’s 90 for symbols which is the hard part of the bijectivity of the norm residue homomorphism, modulo a theorem of Voevodsky. 2000 M...

Secant Varieties of Toric Varieties

If X is a smooth projective toric variety of dimension n we give explicit conditions on characters of the torus giving an embedding X →֒ Pr that guarantee dimSecX = 2n+ 1. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a general point of SecX to lie on a unique secant line when X is embedded into Pr using a complete linear system. For X of dimension 2 and 3 we give formulas for deg SecX in...

Amemiya Norm Equals Orlicz Norm in General*

We present a proof that in Orlicz spaces the Amemiya norm and the Orlicz norm coincide for any Orlicz function ‘p. This gives the answer for an open problem. We also give a description of the Amemiya type for the Mazur-Orlicz F-norm.

Rank, Trace-Norm and Max-Norm

We study the rank, trace-norm and max-norm as complexity measures of matrices, focusing on the problem of fitting a matrix with matrices having low complexity. We present generalization error bounds for predicting unobserved entries that are based on these measures. We also consider the possible relations between these measures. We show gaps between them, and bounds on the extent of such gaps.
